The reason Orchestras had their boom in the late 1700’s – 1800’s is because that was around the same time as the industrial revolution and craftsmen were able to use machines to duplicate exact measurements for lengths, holes and pitches and, to permanently get around temperament issues. Prior to that it was difficult to find three instruments that could be perfectly in tune with one another. Using industrial revolution instruments that could be tuned exactly to one another and building in he fudging of the tuning or temperament, composers started composing major works which wouldn’t have been practical prior.
