If I am folding laundry I am doing something, but the task itself is boring. If I’m ‘doing nothing’ – ie flopped on Lucky Boston Terrier Dog Shamrock St Patrick day shirt my bed staring at the ceiling – I’m not bored, I’m thinking. I may start thinking by doing something boring, like the laundry, but I am unlikely to finish the task – I will deliberately distract myself from the tedium and wander off, an then get angry or despairing when I find the half-done job in my way later. If I fold while catching up with The Great British Bake Off playing, I will more likely finish the task, or wash up with a radio interview – I am better. And then I can do something else – something creative perhaps, now the boring crap is out the way.
