I teach in Victoria Texas. Hurricane Harvey hit us dead on. Lots of our kids lost everything. The worst part is that many of these kids were in a precarious position to begin with. Their houses were in the poor neighborhoods. You know, the ones built in the floodplain. Those of us in more stable financial condition live on the high ground and made it through relatively unscathed. Our less financially fortunate kids were devastated. And we expect them to care about algebra and Beowulf when they are couch surfing with friends and relatives. My heart aches for them.
