I’m sure that Barbara’s guardian feared that no one would attend her party if she hadn’t taken extraordinary measures. So, she contacted her teacher and made sure that plenty of invitations went out. Our teacher followed up the invitations with phone calls, my mother learned what was happening, and I was forced to attend.
