But when I crossed a street into a slum, my friend reminded me not to go any further. I found that tens of thousands of people in the entire neighborhood lived in a large area of low shacks. The houses were made of various scrap materials. The ground was covered with dirt. The garbage was piled up like a hill. Children were peeing on the street. The air was full of strange things. The stench is overwhelming and many homes here lack electricity, clean water and toilets. I was shocked and felt like I was in a refugee camp in Africa.
