By the end of the Middle Ages London’s population had recovered to its pre-Black Death level of 80,000 or so. In 1500 it’s estimated that 4% of England’s population lived in London. Its proximity to the royal courts and palaces meant that nobles and gentry, lawyers and civil servants chose this area as their home: property values were high and the buildings elaborate.
