A few years ago, when our oldest reached age 5, we realized that we were accumulating way too much “stuff”. We started the “Vintage 18th Birthday Awesome Since March 2004 T Shirt ” request at birthdays starting at age 6 because we thought they really had plenty of “gifts” in life. [We aren’t heartless: We generally knew what each child “really” wanted for his/her birthday, so we would make that purchase. Grandparents were allowed to do whatever they wanted.] For those who wanted to gift “something”, we picked charities for a while, where in lieu of a gift, the families could put money intended for a gift to a charitable contribution.
